Active since the early 1990’s, Fluegel is a chameleon visiting many styles from ambient/idm to house, techno, electro and leftfield. He’ll be stepping into the booth on Saturday and joining resident Savile as he goes b2b with Argot/Tasteful Nudes label-boss Steve Mizek (who also happens to run littlewhiteearbuds). Tune in and prep yourselves for a good time.
Magda’s realm as an artist spans far beyond the typical role played by DJs and producers. With an open mind, Magda will try her hand at whatever feels right – from tech collaborations, fashion and art, to producing high-quality Tequila – creating a truly unique, multifaceted expression of herself.
We can’t wait to host her in the booth on Friday with Mor Elian and Hiroko Yamamura. You can get your tickets here: http://bit.ly/2BxGoL1
Couldn’t be more thankful to have Danny Daze here on Saturday with Honey Dijon and Hugo Ball’s own Sevron. Take a listen to Danny’s set from Griessmuehle earlier this year and get an idea of what’s in store. Tickets are available right here: http://bit.ly/2yGTbx4
Octo Octa is no stranger to our room, but what we love about her appearances is that she typically brings us very special LIVE SETS. As you all well know, a live set is its own special entity, the likes of which will never be replicated again, which makes this coming Friday night a real special treat. To prepare you, we recommend getting a feel for Octo’s style and influence by listening to her mix for the Groove Podcast. We know you’ll enjoy it.
What can we say about our beloved Black Madonna? From resident to talent buyer to world-traveler; we’ve known her for many a long year. That’s why we’re so very excited to host her back in Chicago this Saturday night at Hugo Ball! Oh, and we should mention it’s her 40th birthday bash! All signs point to this one being a real night to remember, so get your advance ticket now and be ready to help blow out some candles on the dance floor.
Here at smartbar, we’re big believers in supporting the dance community through thick and thin. As many of you already know, Oktave Recordsfounder Jeff Derringer has been busy beating cancer for the second time, so in anticipation of that victory we’re going to be donating a portion of the night’s proceeds to Imerman Angels, an organization that provides one-on-one support among cancer fighters, survivors, and caregivers. We’re happy to welcome two titans of techno—Ben Sims and Savile—to champion the cause alongside us.
With over two decades of experience behind the decks, Ben Sims’ reputation as one of the world’s leading techno DJs is anything if not well-earned. Known for weaving together sharp-edged funk and hard grooves into wall shaking mixes, Sims’ illustrious reputation precedes him. As for Savile, the smartbar resident and Argot/Tasteful Nudes label partner not only wants you to move—he wants you to ponder. Leaning on hard electronic and metallic beats of midwestern techno, Savile beckons listeners to contemplate creation, connection, and conglomeration one track at a time.
We’ll see you on the dance floor Saturday night…

Anthony Parasole is a man who needs no introduction, but we’re not ones to shy away from a good origin story. A longtime fixture in New York’s underground club scene, the Berghain resident’s fusion of street culture and techno tenets consistently challenges dancefloors worldwide. This year was quite the watershed for the New York luminary—he released his acclaimed album Infrared Vision on Dekmantel. Hoping to capture the grit and glory of his youth, Anthony bestowed the world with a grip of pavement pounding tracks that we can’t wait to hear through our Funktion One.
Anthony will be reigning from the booth all night, so you’ll wanna show up early and stake your claim of the dance floor.
“Najaaraq Vestbirk, the Copenhagen-based DJ known as Courtesy, has a style defined by dazzling contrasts. Linear beats collide with broken rhythms and ravey breaks. Sinister atmospheres are shot through with streaks of warmth. Scuzzy textures turn ultra-clean from one moment to the next. But connecting all her angular rhythms is a clear common thread, a starkness and sense of urgency that’s rooted in the noise and industrial music that inspired her corner of Copenhagen’s scene. This sensibility is reflected in the records on Ectotherm, the label Vestbirk founded last year with Mama Snake, a fellow Copenhagen DJ and a member of Apeiron Crew, and which has so far pushed uncompromising club music from new names like Schacke, Rune Bagge and Ibon.”
Catch her at #Slack with resident Olin this weekend: http://bit.ly/2wW3ERE
Carl Craig doesn’t just blaze trails—he builds whole universes one mix at a time. The Detroit-based producer will be popping into smartbar on September 9 to help us celebrate our 35th anniversary, and we’ll be needing your assistance on the dance floor.
One of the most important names in second gen of Detroit techno, few can match Craig’s level of artistry, influence, and creativity both in the studio or behind the decks. Whether he’s slicing and dicing chilly techno beats (“A Wonderful Life”) or forging epic house cuts (his remix of Tori Amos’ “God”), Craig never fails to bring surprise and innovation to his craft.
Known as one-half of the acclaimed Discovery crew, FASO will be warming up the crowd, so you’ll wanna stake out a spot early. Mark your calendars, nab your tickets—do whatever you gotta to make it to this can’t-miss night.
The deep house expert Oskar Offermann is stopping in this Friday night so it seemed only appropriate to share this spacey mix with you all. Dive in and plan to explore the dance floor with us this Friday – no helmets required.
Very excited to have this mix from Juana for Savile’s [service] residency this Friday night. Take a listen to get in the mood and nab your advance tickets while they’re hot. See you on the dancefloor.
What can we say about the smartbar resident & Hugo Ball co-creator that hasn’t already been said? Take a listen to Sevron’s mix for Abstract Science Radio and get a feel for what you can expect Friday night when he makes an appearance alongside Subject Detroit alum DJ Bone. Get your tickets: http://bit.ly/2vLFRpI
As Lollapalooza looms nearer we’re elated to welcome DirtyBird founder Justin Martin to the booth for an official Lollapalooza aftershow. This one already sold out in advance, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a journey through his After Hours mix and hope to get some of the limited tickets available at the door Friday night. See you there?
Saturday night Resident Advisor and Hugo Ball welcome Helena Hauff to the decks with an appearance from some of the Hugo Ball crew, including Eris Drew, Justin Long and Sevron.

Jayda G (Freakout Cult, 1080p) returns to Smartbar this Friday, bringing the infectious energy and groove you need to start your weekend off right. Vibing high and hot off the release of her new Freakout Cult record with Laylay, Jayda G hits Chicago before continuing on to Boston, and NYC for Panorama arthritis Music Festival. For a taste of what’s to come check out her Discwoman mix from earlier this year.

Have you heard about this lil 35th Anniversary shindig we’re kicking off this summer? Here’s the rundown: July marks smartbar’s 35th year of being the greatest dance floor in Chicago (and let’s face it, probably the world). It’s a pretty big deal and wouldn’t ya know it, techno luminary KEVIN SAUNDERSON is pitching in with the festivities.
Platinum-selling recording artist, label boss, festival promoter, innovative DJ: there’s a lot to be said antibiotics about Kevin Saunderson. As one of the legendary Belleville Three, his influence runs deep within his hometown of Detroit and beyond. His nickname of “The Elevator” couldn’t be more apt—for launching Detroit’s new sound into the global stratosphere, his high-octane DJ sets, and his 35 years-and-counting career of progressing the culture he helped create.
Let’s show Kevin a real Chicago welcome this Friday—snag your tickets to his set today!
Saturday Oktave is back with special guest Speedy J and resident Jeff Derringer. Take a listen to the first half of Speedy J’s all night set from 2016 and get a feeling for what to expect. See you on the dance floor.
It’s no surprise this versatile artist is in such high demand, whether alcoholism she’s creating trip hop and down tempo with production partner Lauren Dillard as CREEP, or giving life to hedonistic dance tracks in her solo works, Lauren always captures the essence of the genre, deftly shaping musical ideas into her signature sound.
Catch her Saturday night at #Changes with Samone and Mindy Sherman.
Over the course of several EPs, two albums and many live performances, Laurel Halo has created music which is as strikingly original and engaging as it is unbound to conventions. There is an adventurousness in taste, an expert ear for detail and talent in seeking out exciting and surprising sonic combinations and contrasts – all skillfully antidepressants bound together without ever feeling forced. Ultimately, the result is something which is captivating, irresistibly fun and rich for unpicking. To accompany the mix, we discussed over email her approach to playing live, her last record and the perception and reception of her work.
Catch her in the booth Thursday night at Neon Falls.
Take a listen to her set from Printworks London and get ready to experience what she has to offer Saturday night!
