DAPHNE 2017 – ERIS DREW & SOLD – HUGO BALL MIX

Posted on: April 26th, 2017 by Severin Delabar

As promised, this two hour mix of intense music is sold and Eris Drew’s follow-up to their presentation at 2017’s Daphne workshop on women in electronic music at Smart Bar. At the extremes the mix includes some of the most healing, refined and focused music ever committed to tape (e.g., C.C. Hennix, Oliveros) and also some of the most raw and cathartic (e.g., Hogg, Cc, Fire-Toolz). Where we hear techno it is created on hand made devices (Antenes borrowed radio technology) or on esoteric systems like Laurie Spiegel’s compositions for the digitally controlled analog oscillators at Bell labs in the mid-70s. Musique concrète is represented by its principal innovators and contemporary artists like Olivia Block. Life and death energies are explored by solitary voices, whether through the musical activism of Moor Mother or the solitary mediation of Elaine Radigue’s “Trilogie de la Mort” (Trilogy on Death). In keeping with Daphne’s ethos, we approached our curation with a queer view of gender and inclusive view of womanness so as not to exclude marginalized non-binary voices and trans musicians. We mixed live off cassette, vinyl, CD, and Youtube to democratize our libraries. Because we are Hugo Ball selectors we included music both old and new, from people we know and also from times, places and cultures that we connect to only through the magic of this music.
The mix was recorded live on April 9, 2017. Eris and sold would like to thank Alex Bond for their invaluable assistance in compiling and recording the mix and Shane Christian for her assistance in compiling artists for the mix. Following the track pharmacy list below is a list of the music journalists and writers sold discussed during the Workshop.

This weekend we’re beyond thrilled to welcome Nina Kraviz to the booth in the second weekend of our month-long Daphnes series. Advance tickets are almost gone, but worry not – there’ll be tickets available at the door, so get here early and get in line. You won’t want to miss this!

Monday Mix – Leo Leal ‘XLR8R Podcast 470’

Posted on: February 13th, 2017 by Brett Crawford

With releases on imprints like John Digweed’s world famous Bedrock label, Kollektiv Turmstrasse’s Musik Gewinnt Freunde and Unlike Muzik, it’s really no surprise that Leo Leal has been rising through the popularity ranks the way he has. A Mexican native, Leo’s prowess as a both a musician and producer lends itself to his craft in the most skin care natural of ways. His recent mix for XLR8R has been on steady rotation around the smartbar offices, and considering he’ll be in the booth this Friday with Smallville Records regular Christopher Rau and Chicago’s own Mantas Steles, you should give it a listen.

Monday Mix – Matthew Dear @ Movement 2016

Posted on: January 30th, 2017 by Brett Crawford

Matthew Dear, the man with a hand in labels Ghostly International and Spectral Sound, wears many hats. His early work under his given name is considered by many to be house music essential listening, while his various monikers like False, Jabberjaw, and most notably Audion provide a twist into the twisted mind of a techno provigil master. Combine that with his more recent indie-rock influenced work like 2010’s critically acclaimed Asa Breed, and you’ve got yourself a bona fide electric music polymath. Expect the same sonic variety from his DJ set this Saturday alongside smartbar resident Olin. Grab yourself an advance ticket and park it on the dance floor.
