SmartBlog talks to The Advent
Starting as a sound engineer for Jack Trax in London almost 20 years ago, Cisco Ferreira has recorded under a slew of different monikers with different collaborators, but he’s best known for his techno releases as The Advent. Ahead of his appearance at SmartBar this weekend, he answered a few random questions about the past, the present, and the pizza…
What are you listening to right now? Are there any new producers that you’ve been impressed with? What’s inspiring you lately?
Listening to New Album from H-Productions..”Recombination Sequence 1″ a collaborations album with artists’ that are currently working
with Cari Lekebusch’s Label.
New artists Im into the moment are Spirakos from Cz, & Jason Fernandes from UK..
How did your G-Flame moniker come about? Do you think you’ll be using that again?
It came to light in 95/96, with my ex Advent partner “Colin McBean”, we both had a mutual respekt for house music, as we both were involved in K.C.C. an early UK house Collective concept that was formed by “K”eith Franklin, from early UK Group “Bang The Party”, had their 1st release on Transmat back in late 80′s.. Me “C”isco & “C”olin.
So me & Colin started to blend Techno & house influences on some tracks we experimenting with in the studio & eventually we had a collection of material and decided to start a new alias, G Flame & Mr G was born…
What’s the story behind Retreat and Level X/Y/Z?
Retreat was just a title of a track, no concept… but The Level X Y Z, was to replace your usual A B C titles which is commonly used..
As someone who has been in this nearly from the beginning, you’ve seen so many ebbs and flows and trends, but where do you think electronic music is headed in the near future?
For the real Techno Pioneers & innovators of this music I think they/we have been pushed to one side, for the more commercial dance acts.. 1st name comes to mind is Deadmouse, this is where the main promoters, events are moving towards, big names, commercial line ups & for me no real music history being exposed to masses, just modern day commercial crap.. but off course this is the bigger scale. If you strip down to smaller events like Berlin’s Berghain, they still prefer Proper mind bending techno…
Tell us about what you’ve been working on lately, and what’s in the works.
Just Finished a new studio Album “Sonic Intervention” for H-Productions, that will drop in september, also have remixes “Spektre, Redhead, Marco Bailey.. plus new releases on Kombination Research, Codeworks, Mixworks USA & MB Elelktronics.. plus more.. so watch this space..
You work with Industrialyzer quite a bit; how did that come about?
I met Ricardo in 2003 holland, and it kind’s all kick started from them, we kept meeting at all festivals & clubs in Belgium & Holland, then got together & I eventually released his 1st record on my Kombination Research.
I believe the last time you were in Chicago was also for a gig at SmartBar, along with Industrialyzer and Angel Alanis. Do you have any memories of that?
Yes Smartbar for me is still the only true venue that brings out real techno acts & DJs.. so many good memories in the past, also from upstairs @ The Metro.. Chi Town, I always had a deep special respect for, as I had early studio experiences with some of your house pioneers when I worked as a sound engineer @ Jack Tracks London.. so working with Fingers Inc, Marshall jefferson, Adonis, in the early days kinda is where it all started for me..
Is there anything specific that you’d like to do while you’re in the States?
Shop till i drop… shit is cheap over here…
Do you like Chicago style pizza?
yes.. big thick & tasty , just Like your music..
The Advent will be playing a live set at Smartbar this Saturday, July 7th, with Chicago’s own Stephen Tang, Frankie Vega, and Merrick Brown (whose exclusive SmartBar mix can be found here). For more details and tickets, check the event page.
